This week's featured woman entrepreneur is Anna Belyaev, CEO of Type A Learning Agency (Chicago, IL), a company that offers custom e-learning development, consulting in learning services, and a line of off-the-shelf products.
about Type A Type A Learning Agency (www.typea.net) was founded in 1999 to help the folks who lead the world's greatest organizations move the masses and make a difference. The company specially designs e-learning courses, campaigns, and communities to the cultural, technical, and strategic needs of its clients, which have included such prestigious brands as Walgreens, Pfizer, Motorola, and the American Lung Association. Founder of the Chicago Learning Council, Type A's CEO is on a mission to reinvent Chicago as the Silicon Valley of Learning and to use her influence to create 10,000 fantastic jobs where our nation's best and brightest can leverage their talents to make a difference for others.
Anna's Top 10 Tips
1. Take 100% accountability. The most effective way to approach any situation or conversation is to assume 100% accountability for the current reality and what will come of it. The results of this practice are always worth whatever mental preparation you need to do to get to a place of being 100% accountable, with zero blame and zero excuses, for the past, present, and future.
2. Ask for what you want. Before you enter any business conversation, know what you want from the conversation well enough to express it clearly and concisely up front. When you don't, you risk annoying others by wasting their time and putting the burden of figuring out what you want and how to help you on them.
3. Work it out in conversation. Some things will always be best handled in a live conversation! Pick up the phone and request a live conversation instead of emailing, texting, instant messaging or leaving voicemail whenever the subject involves or could involve strong emotions or other stress for either party, requires obtaining agreement, or involves highly confidential information. Not sure? Then for sure pick up the phone!
4. Know what your life's about. An entrepreneur's life can be a real rollercoaster and gets shaken at the core more than most people can stomach. One trick for staying sane is to know your higher reason for taking on the challenge. For me, it's a commitment that every human being on this planet have an opportunity to make the difference s/he is capable of making and to be rewarded for the difference s/he makes.
5. Paint your life in time. The more successful you get, the greater the pressures on your time. To avoid overwhelm and dropping balls, make sure everything you've promised is actually scheduled specifically in time and not just floating on a TO DO list for "sometime." To accommodate the inevitable unknowns, create white space in your schedule that can absorb tasks that slipped or came up last minute. I recommend blocking off time at the start and end of each day, each week, and each month. The secret here is to leave it blocked off and unscheduled.
6. Work backward. The secret to accomplishing what you want to is create a detailed enough picture of what that is that it's easy to see what steps you'll have to take to get there. So I always recommend starting by putting the end in time and working backward. You may well have to adjust the end date and all the dates in between, but at least you'll have discovered the key steps on the ladder to your dream.
7. Join TEC. Athletes determined to win the Olympics hire specialized training teams to help them get there. Entrepreneurs who want to create high-performing companies join TEC (www.teconline.com). If you're serious about winning, you'll need a formal structure and experienced, committed coaches to hold you accountable to your dream on all those days when you lose sight of it and who you are.
8. Invite others to play. People want to make a difference. Let folks know what you're up to and how they can contribute! I recommend defining all the roles people can play - e.g., moral supporter, referral source, recruiter, investor - until you have a list that would allow anyone who wants to contribute a way to do so.
9. Remember, it's only a game. Whatever becomes of your business, there's a difference on this earth that only you can make, and there will always be many other fantastic, fun, rewarding games that you can play to make it.
10. Have a blast! You're creating a future from scratch and opportunity for others and money from nothing. That's magical. It's miraculous. It's a privilege. And it's appreciated. Thank you for being one of the brave souls taking on the responsibility of creating the wealth and jobs and opportunity that make our nation a great place to live.
