This week's featured woman entrepreneur is Roxanne Darling, CEO of Bare Feet Studios LLC (Honolulu, Hawaii), a web development company. Roxanne leverages her extensive training and coaching background to help her clients understand the business relevance of the Internet and how to use it to grow the bottom line.

about Bare Feet Studios
Bare Feet Studios is a web development company based in Honolulu, Hawaii, serving virtual clients across the U.S. Co-owner Roxanne Darling manages sales and operations. After ten years as Internet developers and business advisors, Bare Feet Studios has proven ability to help clients use the Internet to deliver their messages and make more money. In short, they serve as your "Virtual CTO." Bare Feet Studios knows the web can be one of your best assets.

Roxanne's Top 10 Tips

1. Who owns your web domain?
Well you do, or at least you should. Too often though, a web developer will register your domain in his name. Then, he goes out of business. Then, you are looking for a new developer but no one can access the domain because the registered owner is trekking in Nepal.

2. How can you find out who owns your domain name?

You can do a "whois" search. The registration information is public. When you register a web address, we recommend having a P.O. box or a business address, not your home address!

3. What's your web strategy?
Most developers now are savvy enough to as you want to do with your web site. So it's more than just a static online brochure. But are they really helping you understand the power of the web? Make sure that "Web 2.0" concepts are on the table if you are planning a new or updated web site.

4. What's Web 2.0?

It refers to the next generation of web technology. Web 1.0 relied on you having to spend a lot of money and/or time to get people to find and visit your web site. Now, web software (like this blog) allows for online networking among seemingly unconnected businesses, just by leaving a comment or adding a trackback. What if you could add a page to your web site (think "blog") and just by clicking "submit" you
could automatically be putting a link back to your site on major web directories? And that's just one of many Web 2.0 features.

5. Are you thinking web for internal as well as external use?
Most people think about the web for their "public web site." But the web is a great tool for managing your company too. One of our favorites is an online Project Manager called Basecamp.

6. How much do you pay for site hosting?
We think too many small companies use what we call "creepy cheap" hosting. Hosting is one area where you really get what you pay for. Or not get what you don't pay for. It costs money to get those software patches installed asap. It costs money to upgrade the hardware. It costs money to have real human beings on call 24-7 for support. It takes brains to configure your DNS so your site can't be hacked. Cheap hosting is for soccer mom sites, not your business website.

7. Online Security - An Oxymoron?
It doesn't have to be. But there's more to it than collecting your information on a secure page. What happens to the info after that? If the cart emails credit card info to the merchant, well, all bets are off. Having a developer who knows how to check that the entire transaction process is secure, can prevent hacking. We look at our server logs. There's not a day goes by when people are not trying to sneak in.

8. Is it really text or is it a graphic appearing as text?
Web 1.0 featured lots of very pretty home pages, with few words and lots of imagery, or built in Flash, so it appears more like a movie than a page. Pretty is nice but Google will ignore you because it is after the facts: typed text on a web page that it can index. It's real text if you can select it with your cursor and paste it somewhere else. Otherwise, it's just a pretty picture.

9. Is your web site polished?
I bet you don't go in for a pedicure and say "hold the polish!" Yet many web sites are launched before they are finished. Pages are still titled "Default" up there in the title bar. Or the copyright was set to the year first born, and not updated. Or photos have not been optimized for a computer screen. Polish says you are a web and
business pro.

10. How do you protect your brand online?

You make your web site look and feel just like your offline business presence. You add your company name to the title (and the footer) of any PDF files available for download. You have a good domain name at "dot com" not "dot net" because the "dot com" was already taken. You sign up for a Google Alert so you can see what others are saying about you or doing with your content. Most of all, you get out there and interact with your site and others like this one on a regular basis!
