This week's featured woman entrepreneur or executive is Janet Hanson, Founder of 85Broads and Milestone Capital Management (New York, New York).

Founded in 1999, 85Broads began as a Web-based independent network for current and former Goldman Sachs women professionals. The name 85Broads is a cheeky reference to Goldman Sachs headquarters address (85 Broad Street, New York). The organization has since grown into a dynamic and diverse community of over 14,000 members around the world, including Broad2Broad, a network connecting MBA students and graduates, and Broad2Be, a network that connects female undergrads with MBAs and the 85 Broads network. A Columbia M.B.A., Ms. Hanson joined Goldman Sachs in 1977, and throughout her career she consistently ranked among the highest producing professionals in the Fixed Income Division. Hanson also co-launched Milestone Capital Management (www.milecap.com) in 1994 with her husband. Milestone now boasts $2 billion in assets under management and was recently among Working Mother Magazine's Top 25 best small companies for working mothers. Hanson currently also serves as a Managing Director at Lehman Brothers. She is active on a number of boards, including breastcancer.org, The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, The Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children, The President's Commission at Wheaton College, The Board of Advisors of the Center for the Advancement of Women, and The Task Force for the Center for Work-Life Policy. Her new book, "More Than 85 Broads," shares women's business success stories.



Janet's Top 10 Tips


1. In all aspects of life - education, career, family, love, friendship, mentoring - there's no one set path. There is no formula for success, because we define success on our own terms.

2. Develop your own subset of "networks". Leverage the typical networks - alumni, corporate, social - but also create your own more intimate and personal "board of directors" to help you manage various decisions along life's path.

3. The mystery of a "work/life balance" is that it is more of a one-ness, or partnership, rather than a give and take. Finding solutions that are optimal rather than balanced allow you to replace compromise with teamwork.

4. Think of yourself as the CIA - gather intelligence, disseminate accurate information, listen. Be open to learning something from everyone you encounter - the taxi driver, the waiter, the kid next door. The more diverse this group of encounters the more you will learn.

5. You must learn to make money for your firm as well as your clients. Treat them both with reverence. Great execution and service are key.

6. The 3 little pigs is not a children's story. Build your house with bricks. Money saved means freedom - money squandered means your career comes with leg irons attached.

7. Give to charitable organizations that you are passionate about. 85Broads calls this strategic philanthropy. Remember to give your time and talents, not just your money. Be kind and generous of spirit.

8. A couple of 'Don't's: Don't wait for someone to say, "Why don't you." You have to make things happen. And, don't be afraid to ask for help. If you think it is a sign of weakness, get over it.

9. Take care of your health. Many people depend on you. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer - I had gone for a routine mammogram, which turned up absolutely nothing - I was in a rush. My radiologist wanted to do a quick ultra sound. He said, "Hey, it will only take 5 minutes". Sure enough, it was bad news. I had surgery 2 weeks later. Be good to yourself, watch out for stress, and stay healthy.

10. Listen to your head and your heart to discover and develop your own "story". And remember - it's a work in progress! The one theme that remains, though, is your passion. The most powerful and courageous voice any of us can listen to is our own, but it is often the one that we spend the least time cultivating and tuning into.
